- Have the child read aloud. By doing this, the child would not just be hearing what he/she is reading but also seeing what's being read. Reading aloud also causes the child to read a bit slower, giving him/her time to process what is being read.
- Have the child re read the book for fluency. The more they read, the better and more familiar they become with the words and the story, and eventually, they will be able to better understand what they read.
- Discuss, Discuss, Discuss. Talking about what was/is being read helps retain knowledge and information. Ask questions before, during and after the story. As a child, i grasped what was being taught/read to me better when there was a discussion and examples used.
- Another great way to boost comprehension is by starting with simple and short easy readers. Let them build confidence and understanding with sorter stories. increase content as their vocabulary and understanding increases.
- A good vocabulary is also important for reading comprehension. If the child does not know a word, it can affect their understanding what is being read. Try to introduce new words that are not commonly used to your child. A knew word a day/week (depending on age of the child) can help a great deal.
To accomplish this, you need LOVE and PATIENCE😃
A harsh setting will affect the outcome of successful teaching and learning.
